Meditation 101

Setting aside 5-10 minutes of our day for meditating can be a great way to improve our health. When I started practicing meditation I had no idea what I was doing. I was searching for a feeling or listening for a voice of guidance. Recently I happened upon a video on by Dan Harris, author of the book, “10% Happier”, and he explained a meditation technique that was simple and effective. Sit down and get comfortable with your back straight, either in a chair or on the floor, whatever works best for you. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing. When you become aware of a thought or feeling that is not related to your breathing, simply let that thought or feeling go and turn your attention back to your breathing. It’s that simple! Do that again and again for 5-10 minutes. Almost immediately my anxiety was arrested and I was able to enjoy better concentration. Having been a habitual nail biter my entire life I no longer bite my nails. Texting and driving has been eliminated. The endless self talk that goes on inside my head all day long has been quieted. I feel great and you too can enjoy better health and a happier life when you begin this simple practice. Until next time, peace and blessings!
